CHECKLIST

When considering alternative facilities to determine the best site for long-term care, you will want to gather as much information as possible, and talk to as many people face-to-face as appropriate. Throughout the process, it is important to ask the right questions.

On the federal government’s Medicare Web site (http://www.medicare.gov) there is an excellent checklist of items to consider when choosing a long-term care facility. You may wish to use such a list, or develop one of your own, when considering a facility. This checklist indicates some typical questions you may wish to ask.

When visiting a Catholic Long Term Care Network facility, we encourage you to seek answers to those questions that are of concern to you. Here are some examples:

• Does our facility have the special services you require?
• Is our facility close enough for family and friends to visit?
• Are our current residents clean and properly dressed?
• Is our facility free from unpleasant odors?
• Is the temperature in our facility comfortable?
• Is the lighting in our facility appropriate?
• Is the relationship between our staff and residents polite and caring?
• Are our staff members wearing their nametags?
• Is our nursing coverage appropriate?
• How often do the doctors visit?
• Are our residents’ rooms clean, safe, and comfortable?
• Are all exits clearly marked?
• Are there quiet visiting areas?
• Are all exits, doorways, and rooms suitable for wheelchair use?
• How are the spiritual needs of the residents met?
